Swisse Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin. There are several forms of vitamin D, the form primarily utilised by the human body is the naturally derived cholecalciferol (vitamin D3), rather than the synthetic ergocalciferol form (vitamin D2). It is estimated that only 10% of a person’s vitamin D comes from dietary sources, the majority being produced in the skin from sunshine exposure.
Functions and General Science:
Vitamin D has a variety of roles involving nearly every system of the body.
The major function of vitamin D is to aid in the absorption of calcium and maintain normal blood levels of calcium and phosphorus. It helps to increase bone mineral density and decrease fractures.
Vitamin D also contributes to the reproductive system, the digestive system, and the immune system function.
Very few foods are natural sources of vitamin D.4 Sources include fatty fish such as mackerel, cod-liver oil, fortified dairy products, sun-exposed mushrooms and liver.5
The vitamin D content of all animal products is dependent upon the individual animal's vitamin D status and the use of fortified feed. There is therefore concern that, as a consequence of modern agricultural and acquacultural practises, vitamin D content is in decline. Farmed salmon have shown a 75% decreased when compared to wild salmon.
It is estimated 90% of vitamin D3 is synthesised in the skin via photochemical reactions using ultraviolet B (UV-B) radiation from sunlight. Due to this, those at risk for deficiency include people with dark skin colour, little skin exposure due to clothing choices or cultural/religious dress codes, the elderly, limited sun due to geography or season, prolonged and exclusive breastfeeding.
